How do you feel when company leaders continue to look the other way and fail to hold team members accountable to their performance? Or worse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they call a meeting to preach to the group about teamwork, working together and supporting one another to get the job done?
Looked at in that perspective, you can see every employee as a "rower". If one person drops their oars, or fails to follow through when others are counting on them, it means those relying on them can't complete their own tasks… it has a domino effect.

Most all of us have experienced something similar at some point in our life when working on a team.

And no if we define teamwork as a group of people who spend time together in the work environment in meeting after meeting to discuss their "team goals" or to create that sense of "team spirit".
That’s why it's vital for business leaders today to understand and define “teamwork” in a much different manner than they may be used to.
To apply our earlier example of the building materials manufacturer, the transport department wears abuse from management who has fielded complaints from unhappy customers who did not receive their expected orders. Transport failed to do what was required because they didn't receive the instructions on the goods to be delivered from Production. In today’s global economy individuals may not even come into contact with each other. Daily communication may be limited to one email. There are few athletic events where one person can make such a dramatic difference in the team’s performance by not “pulling their weight.” Rowing is certainly one of them (my wife reminds me of this fact every time we get into a two-person kayak) and offers a great example of what happens in business when employees do not work together to help their company, department or division achieve its goals.
That is "teamwork."

So you want a promotion then?

Recruiting and retaining the best talent
Great sales coaches must also become great human resources managers in order to recruit and retain the best talent. Something else to keep in mind when recruiting the best talent is the difference between aptitude and attitude. Aptitude refers to components of competency, that while essential, can be increased through proper orientation and training. Attitude on the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], refers to a person's beliefs, values, and work ethic, which are
unlikely to change. When in doubt, hire attitude and train aptitude.
The key to making SFA work is to encourage its use, not just within your sales department but among all departments that deal with customers. People often use the terms SFA and CRM synonymously but there's an important distinction. CRM does not necessarily mean the sales tasks are truly automated. The purpose of measuring performance is to have clarity on the profitability of the sales volume brought in by each sales team member. With that seemingly attainable outcome in mind, why do companies struggle with assessing sales force productivity? They sometimes find measuring sales performance challenging because they have failed to incorporate quantitative and qualitative criteria. Quantitative criteria includes: sales volume in dollars or units, growth over previous years, new accounts, and profitability. Qualitative criteria includes: attitude, product knowledge, communication skills, personal appearance, customer feedback,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], selling skills, and personal initiative. When assessing the productivity and profitability of your sales team, be sure to differentiate between aptitude and attitude. When in doubt, train a poor aptitude and fire a bad attitude.

This got me thinking about the unpredictability of life. As I frequently say, as you go through life stuff will happen -- good stuff, bad stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], happy stuff, sad stuff, encouraging stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], frustrating stuff. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not that stuff that happens that's important; it's how you react to it. You can control the people and events in your life. You can control how you react to the people and events in your life.
I know this isn't always easy. In fact, it's seldom easy. But the harder you find it to react positively to negative people and events, the more important it is for you to do so. Don't blame people or circumstances when things go wrong. Instead, choose to learn the lesson behind every less than successful relationship or event.
The common sense point here is simple. Successful people commit to taking personal responsibility for their lives and career. Only you can make you a success. You have to take personal responsibility for creating the successful life and career you want and deserve. Persistence is the mark of people who are committed to taking personal responsibility for their lives and careers. Persistent people keep going; even in -- no especially in -- the face of difficulties and problems. Promise yourself that you will commit to taking personal responsibility for your life and career in 2010. Be persistent. Keep at it, and you will reach your goals.
